Nigelio

Nigelio - Nigeria has become synonymous with polio. Is this a Nigelio phenomenon?

This week, the MOP-UP programme for Polio Vaccination was conducted in Nigeria.

Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola kicked off the Mop Up Supplement Immunisation activity in the State at the Apapa- Iganmu Local Council Development Area, stressing that no new case of Polio infection has been recorded in the State in the last three years.

Lots of "vaccinators" were seen clad in the green polio jersey, going from house-house to administer the vaccine to children 5 years and below.

But when will Nigeria be removed from the disgraceful position of One of the Only Three remaining nations of the world where polio is still endemic? (remaining two being Afghanistan and Pakistan) - India was recently removed from the list.

I'm using this medium to plead with the vaccinators to ensure they administer the vaccines. We have heard of news whereby the vaccines are emptied in the drain and the volunteers just go back and collect the money for the exercise.

My concern and prayer is that Nigeria is removed from this disgraceful list, and more than that is that our children be saved from the devastating polio disease.

Come next year when we celebrate 24/10 (World Polio Day), Nigeria should be announced as a polio free nation.
